| Andrew Zaplatynsky studied with Edgar Ortenberg (former member of the legendary Budapest String Quartet ) at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. As an audition winner, he performed twice with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of twelve.

Upon graduating from high school, he attended Indiana University and studied with the renowned Josef Gingold . While at I.U., there was extensive chamber music coaching with such artists as Fritz Magg (cellist of the Berkshire Quartet), Janos Starker , and William Primrose . The relationship with Mr. Primrose developed into a friendship that remains one of the warmest memories of an already memorable period at Indiana University. As a member of the U.S. Marine Band in Washington, D.C. he performed at the White House for various State functions. While in Washington he attended the Catholic University of America and continued his violin studies with another great pedagogue, Ivan Galamian , in New York City. Among the highlights of summer music programs that were an important part of his musical education were Kneisel Hall in Blue Hill, Maine (coaching with Edgar Ortenberg, Sacha Jacobsen , Joseph Fuchs, and Arthur Balsam ), Colby College (The Hungarian Quartet), and Meadowmount (Ivan Galamian and Josef Gingold). Professional orchestral experience includes positions with the Rotterdam Philharmonic (Holland), the Minnesota Orchestra , the Detroit Symphony (as an Assistant Concertmaster), and the Cincinnati Symphony (as an Associate Concertmaster). There were numerous Carnegie Hall appearances with the Minnesota, Detroit, and Cincinnati symphony orchestras, in addition to four Carnegie Hall appearances with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra . Since the summer of 2005, Andrew Zaplatynsky has been a visiting professor at the Escuela de Music of the Fundacion Universitaria Juan N. Corpas, in Bogota,Colombia. The two summers to date have included a total of 21 weeks of teaching over four visits. Mr. Zaplatynsky plays on a Joseph Curtin violin made in 1995. | |
